Methodist Hospital opened its first hospital in 1908. Since that time, Methodist has grown in reputation and stature. In 1997, Methodist Hospital, Indiana University Hospital, and Riley Hospital for Children united to form Indiana University Health, which today operates 1,300 beds with more than 57,000 inpatient admissions and 900,000 outpatient visits per year. Methodist is known for its tertiary care and highly specialized services to treat those with severe medical emergencies and scheduled surgical procedures.

In 2020, IU Health announced that University Hospital, Methodist Hospital, and the Indiana University School of Medicine would be combined to form a new hospital and educational research center on a campus expansion south to 12th Street.
