An important feature of the square is the cenotaph, a war memorial built in 1929 and dedicated on Remembrance Day (November 11) of that year. It was designed by Regina architect and ex-serviceman F.H. Portnall, and made of Vancouver grey granite, supplied by the Western Granite and Marble Co. The cenotaph was originally located just east of the intersection of 21st Street East and 2nd Avenue South. In 1957, it was relocated to the new city hall site to increase its civic prominence and improve traffic flow at the original location.
