Designed c. 1909 by architect Henry A. Smith with structural elements by Guastavino Fireproof Tile Co. as an tenement apartment complex for low-income families with a member suffering from tuberculosis. Having been a former overseeing physician at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Smith convinced Anne Harriman Vanderbilt to finance the project. Believing that sanitation was critical, Smith envisioned passageways from the street that showcased Guastavino barrel vaults to visitors.
