In 1892 Carrère & Hastings designed the Beaux-Arts style town house at 11 East 71st Street for Richard M. Hoe, a banker, and his wife, Annie. Robert Hoe had started in the business of making printing type and presses in 1805. By 1833, the year of his death, the Hoe presses had an established place in the printing industry. In 1979 The NYTimes reported that an illegal gambling casino, the V.I.P. Club, was operating in an apartment at 11 East 71st Street. The interior was rebuilt in 2001 by Howard Lutnick.
