Labrador City combined with the town of Wabush (3 miles/5km south), these two communities have a combined population of around 11,000. Locally, the region is known has Labrador West. The two towns were built as company towns in the 1960's around two different iron mines. Iron Ore Company of Canada currently owns and operates the mine north of Labrador City. Lab City has all the conveniences of any modern town, a shopping mall, grocery stores, bowling alley, ice arena, alcohol, and a Tim Hortons.
