Artificial pond conceived in 1868 as a scenic addition to Allegheny Commons. The pond has seen its ups and downs; its literal low point came in the 1940s when it was drained and used to store scrap metal for the World War II effort (it was informally rechristened "Lake Aluminum"). A redevelopment program begun the 1960s brought the pond back to life.
