Originally opened as the Virginia Beach Pavilion in 1981, what is today known as the Virginia Beach Convention Center was only a fraction of its current size. The original Pavilion, losing business to bigger and more modern convention facilities in the region, was first expanded, more than doubling its square footage. Later on, the original Pavilion was demolished and rebuilt, integrating it into the new sections. The expansion project ran from 2004 to 2006.
