Allerton Park is a park and conference center owned by the University of Illinois. The land was once owned by Robert Allerton, heir to the meatpacking fortune, and he built a stately home on the site. It's located on the Sangamon river, and the park lands include both landscaped and natural areas.
A large portion of the southern part of the park is known as the Allerton Natural Area, and is designated a National Natural Landmark for its well-preserved stream valleys and forests.
