Bulgarian Tower (Ouranoupoli)

Greece / Halkidiki / Ouranypolis / Ouranoupoli
 tower, fortification

The tower was built in the 11th or 12th century, as part of a "metochi" (possesion) of the monastery of Vatopedi. The top storey and the retaining wall at its base are the result of extensive repairs after an earthquake, probably in 1585. The wooden constructions in the interior (floors, stairs, etc), and the roof, date in the mid-19th century. The building that is attatched to the tower was a boat house, with storage space in the mid-level, and living space on the top floor.
