StarPhoenix clock (Saskatoon)

Canada / Saskatchewan / Saskatoon
war memorial, street / public clock

Seth Thomas is America's oldest clock maker (since 1813) and has street & tower clocks all over the world. This Seth Thomas street clock was erected in 1920 by W. Herman in honor of Talmage Lawson, his business partner, who died in World War I. It is a protected heritage site and is located outside the headquarters of the StarPhoenix, Saskatoon's daily broadsheet newspaper.

Lawson and Herman bought the weekly newspaper "The Capital" in March 1912, and changed its name to The Saskatoon Daily Star. In 1928, The Saskatoon Daily Star and another paper, The Daily Phoenix, amalgamated into The StarPhoenix.

The clock was originally located at the corner of Twentieth Street East and Second Avenue, just outside of the doors of The Saskatoon Daily Star’s office. It was eventually relocated to its present location at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 24th Street East.
