Chubb Block (Saskatoon)

Canada / Saskatchewan / Saskatoon
 school, hairdresser

Beside the original Cairns store, at 227 21st Street East, is the office block designed by William Walter LaChance in 1907 and opened by brothers Hartley and Benjamin Chubb in 1908. The three cherubs holding up the cornice are all that remain of the ornate pediment of the original facade. This appears to have been the brothers’ only venture in to building; they were encouraged, perhaps, by the fortunes being made by others. Ben was a collector of customs with the Inland Revenue department, and Hartley managed the Saskatoon Milling and Elevator Company.

On the opposite side of the street, many of the buildings date from the 1920s. The tall, red brick Priel Block at No. 214 opened in 1929. The name of the block appears on the simple pediment crowning the facade.

It is presently home to the Marvel Esthetics School, a school for hair stylists.
