  • yes........, the top ranked engineering institute.....
  • The GIKI is more like a whole town. It is the largest university of Pakistan with an area spreading to more than 400 ACRES that includes a huge residential area for the faculty, single roomed hostels for the students, a post office,a Bank,a Hospital,General Stores,a Grocery Shop, 2 Schools for children till FSc, hiking tracks, and every sport. Frankly i've only explored a small part of it yet !
  • amir saeed is the best politition of disst swaBI
  • ITS RISING INSTITUTE OF ASIA
  • What's its International Rank ? Does it stand in the Top 100 ? Name some Internationally acclaimed research papers by GIKI. Anyone ? Anyone ?
  • CHAT WITH RECTOR: WHY GIK IS NOT RANKED BY QS ? The Webteam of the Institute recently interviewed the Rector, Jehangir Bashar. Here are some excerpts : Q: Six or seven Pakistani universities have recently been ranked in the top universities of Asia by QS (Quacquarelli Symonds). Some of us are a little surprised that GIK Institute, in spite of its standing among employers and others, has not made it. Why is this? Rector: Not many people are familiar with the way QS conducts its rankings. The answer is quite simple. QS considers only those universities that have more than one “discipline”, according to its own definition. Engineering and Technology”, which is GIK’s core business, and in which it excels, is classified by QS as one discipline, in spite of the fact that the fields covered by the Institute are quite diverse. QS, thus, does not consider GIK for ranking. I should mention, however, that GIK was placed recently at No: 3 in the country in the HEC 2013 Rankings in the Engineering and Technology discipline. It was also ranked as No: 1 in the private sector. Q: What are the new initiatives already taken by the Institute, and those planned for the future? Rector:The Institute has been debating for some time now whether to continue to build on its core strengths or to diversify into other areas. The Institute has decided to do both. In the engineering field the direction is twofold. First, looking at the requirements of the country, and after due diligence, an undergraduate degree course in Chemical Engineering was started last year. In another year or so, we intend to start Power Engineering. Other areas that we are looking at, but a little further down the line, are Industrial Engineering, Energy, Environment and Water Resources. Since there is considerable stress on research, new disciplines, such as Energy Systems Engineering, have been (or are being) introduced at the postgraduate level. The second thrust area is based on our belief that Pakistan must try and acquire footholds in the new and emerging technologies. One such area is Nanotechnology, in which we plan to start an undergraduate degree course shortly. The huge advances in science and technology in areas such as miniaturization and the development of new materials are impacting the now “traditional” fields, including electronics and materials engineering. The Institute is making an effort to stay abreast of these advances. Q: Do you have any plans to introduce new areas other than engineering? Rector: We don’t just have plans; we have done it. Last year we started a postgraduate degree course in Engineering Management. From Fall 2013 (August) we are introducing undergraduate programs in Management Sciences, beginning with Entrepreneurship and Supply Chain Management as specializations. The groundwork is complete, and the required faculty (two of whom are Fulbright Scholars, apart from holding PhDs) is in place. Recognizing the innovative and creative talents of our students, we intend to shortly establish an incubation center, to assist them in commercializing their ideas. We feel the blend of engineering and entrepreneurship will be ideal for the success of this activity. Q: What, in your opinion, is special about GIK? Rector: That, for me, is very awkward to answer. The question should really be put to others, particularly those who have had an association with the Institute. What we are proud of is the quality and dedication of our faculty, and our Alumni, who have in recent years started making a mark in their professions, considering that the first graduate left the Institute only 16 years ago. Besides, they are now paying back to the Institute in terms of financial and professional help. Major employers, who have experienced the GIK graduate, keep coming back for more, and parents keep sending their second and third. I should mention a unique feature of GIK. This is the only university I know in Pakistan which is fully residential: all students and faculty must live on campus, which allows almost round the clock interaction between them, and facilitates research and other academic exchanges and, of course, strong friendships in the student community. It also allows them to take full advantage of the many facilities that the Institute has on offer
