"In Schefferville the options for places to stay are limited. I chose the Guest House, a classic north country log building beside a lake just outside of town, open year round. Its name derives from the days when it was a stopping place for Iron Ore Company of Canada executives and their friends. My hostess, a cheerful native Labradorian named Rita Green, soon had a chicken warming in the oven and a pot of Labrador Tea steeping on the supper table. While I ate, Ms. Green told me that soon they would be hosing down the Guest House with water from the lake to sheath it in ice as insulation against the 30-below-zero days that were just ahead. I turned in early, as I had to be up before sunrise to catch the southbound train. If I missed it, I'd have to wait a week for another. My room was small but neat as a pin, with one of the most comfortable beds I'd ever slept in, piled high with bright woolen blankets."
