The Spanish city of Carmona originated as a Neolithic settlement, was subsequently part of the Tartessic culture, later became a Punic settlement, later a Roman town in the province of Baetica (Carmo), later yet served as capital for a short-lived Muslim taifa state (Qarmunah), and was brought back under Christian rule in 1247 by Fernando III of Castile. Carmona became a city (in the modern formal sense) by royal decree in 1630.
