Most of the fine Lapis Lazuli gemstones in the world are coming from this part of the Kokcha Valley. The intensity and quality of this blue stone is superior to all other sources. Material from here reached as far as Egypt and China several thousand years ago. The mineral is found in small, short seams embedded in far larger seams of marble. The area is too politically unstable for large scale operations.
The village is for the support of the miners.
