"The Wilderness"

This was the 'Wild garden', a more naturalistic and playful area than the formal gardens to the east and south. As well as irregular plantings and unclipped trees this area had lawns for bowls and other games and, of course, the maze, which is virtually the only part of the original 17th century planting to survive.
