Richmond Park

United Kingdom / England / Richmond /

The largest open space in London; one of London's oldest Royal Parks, open to the public. Undulating, with a lovely mix of open countryside, woods including old oaks, ponds and streams. Much of the park has a rural feel - hard to believe you're in London, except for planes overhead on the approach to Heathrow. Herds of deer roam free; the park is rich in other wildlife too. Also home to a famous ballet school in a spectacular location.

There is a big cycle track round the edge, a distance of just over 8 miles. There is also a circular road in the park, accessible through gates in East Sheen, Richmond, Ham, Kingston and Roehampton. Cars only (no commercial vehicles). The speed limit is 20mph. There are car parks near the East Sheen, Kingston and Roehampton gates and at Pembroke Lodge and Pen Ponds (in the centre of the park)

Open 24 hours to pedestrians and cyclists (except in the autumn when a cull of deer is under way), but gates close to cars at dusk.
