This neighbourhood of Ham is notable in being purely housing and was built on the site of the former Hawker/BAC.BAE Aircraft Factory. Its natural situation gave it the economic and aesthetic advantages of being low-rise and having many trees, some of which date back to the factory's days, those along the eastern border principally.

  • This is the correct site for the aircraft factory but The title should read "Sopwith/Hawker/BAe Aircraft Factory". BAC should not be in the title. It was first built in 1917 by the Government and leased by Sopwith Aviation to build Sopwith Snipe and Salamander aircraft in 1918.It was bought by Leyland Motors and used by them from 1920 to 1948. In 1948 it was bought by Sopwith's Aviations successor, Hawker Aircraft, who built Hawker Hunter, Harrier and Hawk Aircraft there. Hawker were nationalised into British Aerospace in 1977 but the site continued making these products until the early 1990s.
