Operational from 1947 through 2002 as the primary solid waste disposal site for the City of New York, the Fresh Kills Landfill, named for the estuaries or kills which drained the one-time marshland, is now being remediated for future use as parkland.

    At full capacity, it held the equivelant of 25 great pyramids.

    Be that as it may, the current plan for this massive landfill is to turn it into an equally massive park, which should certainly be interesting.

    Debris from the World Center collapse was sorted and buried here. Steel was recycled.

    Didn't they rename it because "Fresh Kills" seemed kind of... awkward for a landfill holding 9/11 debris?
