  • How illegal is it to be here?
  • quite, if you're on land. it's an active scrapyard (and it appears the owners also live there, it's a whole weird compound with animals, piles of junk, you name it). You can go behind the burial ground just to the north and go down to the marshy water legally, but that isn't particularly close. exploring it (very carefully) in a kayak is not illegal as far as I can tell (or at least no one could tell you not to paddle around the crafts unless you draw the attention of the coast guard by doing something stupid like lingering in the ultra-busy shipping channel). there have been commercial kayak tours which travel through here, so that sure points to it being legal. I assume it would still be illegal to board the rotting vessels (people have, but good lord that seems unsafe) since they're owned by the Witte scrapyard. There's a boat launch in NJ just north of the yard, but crossing such a busy and dangerous shipping channel shouldn't be attempted by anyone without serious experience and shouldn't be attempted alone.
  • Indeed - Trying to get in on land means you will trespass on private property which is protected by NUMEROUS VICIOUS guard dogs. Coming by water/kayak is OK, but like Wittexpert said its in the middle of a busy commercial shipping channel and the Coast Guard will probably come after you. If you do manage to get there, I wouldnt go on the ships, theyre all rusting and rotting away and are very unstable. Dont expect help if you get hurt, and there are alot of ways to get hurt here.
