The historic town of Southwell is one of the hidden gems of Nottinghamshire. It is dominated by its historic Minster, which dates back to the 12th century.
Nearby is the historic 16th century coaching Inn and Hotel, The Saracen's Head, where Charles 1 spent his last hours of freedom before his final surrender. The inn changed its name from the King's Head after Charles' execution!
At the other end of the town is the Burgage Green. Adjoining the green is Burgage Manor where young Byron stayed with his mother in the early part of the 19th century. Southwell is also famed for being the origin of the Bramley Apple and there is a pub named after it in the town.
