Doncaster is the second settlement in South Yorkshire, after Sheffield which it has close links with. It is known as 'Donny' by the locals. It has a population of about 127,000 although the wider borough is about 290,000.
It has Roman Origins, being on the site of a fort called Danvm. The 'Don' bit comes from here, while the 'caster' means fort (like 'chester'). Doncaster has a long history of horse racing, industry and railways.
