  • Mini Zoo, as it is called, is owned and managed by Mr and Mrs. Rüvuotuo Belho of T. Khel, Kohima Village. It was started solely on personal interest in rearing animals and birds. But as the number grew, (many donated by individuals and well wishers) they had to shift from their resident at Kohima Village to the present location at High School and they started to have visitors who named the place ‘mini zoo. There are presently 40 species of animals and birds with Jack, a 22 years old deer being the oldest. What made you start the zoo? ‘ I was a fierce hunter myself, but observing the loss of wildlife changed me so I started buying birds and animals sold in the market to preserve them ‘. One of the objectives of the zoo is also to abolish hunting in Nagaland. And about how he manages the expenses to preserve the same, he said that he receives no aid from the government and it costs him around Rs 30,000 to 40,000 / month exclusive of helpers’ payments and maintenance.
