This overflow dam (weir) is used by Yolo County Flood Control & Water Conservation District to raise and stabilize the water level in Cache Creek above the dam so that water can be diverted into the West Adams and Winters canals for irrigation.

The crest of the spillway is at the elevation of 216.55 feet, and it can be raised by another 5 feet with an inflatable bladder (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inflatable_rubber_dam). The dam also has sluice gates at both ends to release water at a lower surface level.

Since 2003 there has been concern about the stability of the dam's foundation. As of 2010, repair work is being planned.
