Oroville dam is the highest earthen gravity dam in the western hemisphere. Construction was completed in 1968. Oroville dam, which is on the Feather River, is the start of the California Water Project. Since it's construction, has prevented massive flooding downstream, while storing otherwise surplus Sierra snowmelt for the State Water Project, the (federal) Central Valley Project and the South Bay Aqueduct.
