Belltower of the Znamensky Cathedral, part of the former Monastery of Our Lady of the Sign (Moscow)

Russia / Moscow / Moscow / ulitsa Varvarka
orthodox christianity, belfry, 1780s construction, object of cultural heritage of federal importance (Russia)

The red and white belltower was built is 1784-1789 on the grounds of the former Monastery of Our Lade of the Sign. The belltower is associated with a five-doomed two-level church with brick and green tiles that appears chunky as it is built into the steep slope. A refectory and a winter church are on the lower level and a summer church and Chamber of the Robes occupy the upper tier.

Today inside is a small concert hall, a chapel and an icon workshop that works hard to replace those icons destroyed or sold abroad during Soviet times.
