dam, hydroelectric power station/plant

The Gaston Shoals Hydroelectric Station was completed by the Electric Manufacturing & Power Company by 1908. The hydroelectric plant provided power to Blacksburg, Gaffney, Cowpens, Converse, Clifton, Pacolet, and Spartanburg. The electricity powered cotton mills, mill towns, street lights and the Spartanburg trolley known as Palmetto Traction. Today Gaston Shoals is still in use by Duke Energy.
