cross, road junction
Originally known as Mercat Cross in pre-Reformation times, this is the notional centre of the city which goes back to the mediaeval period, although the site itself has been rebuilt several times in the city's history. The "Mercat" name lives on in several adjacent structures. Glasgow Cross is still the waypoint used for the calculation of distance to the city on road signs.
