Sofia Zoo was founded by royal decree on 1 May 1888, and is Bulgaria's oldest and largest zoological garden.
In 1984, the Zoo was moved from its small location in the center of the capital on the territory of today's municipality "Lozenets", covering an area of more than 360 acres, housing 2,150 animals, representing 237 species (2020).
