Farrell sprung up in 1901 around a new steel mill and remained a steel town for much of the 20th century. The community was incorporated as the Borough of South Sharon and took its current name from James A. Farrell, president of US Steel from 1911 to 1932. The population has declined from a peak of over 15 thousand in 1920 to just over six thousand in the 2000 census, with most of this loss coming after the collapse of the US steel industry in the 1970s.
