The Bogojavlensky monastery was founded in 1296 by prince Daniel Aleksandrovich. During the time of Ivan Kalita (1342) the first stone church of China-town was built, the cathedral within the monastery. In 1624 the temple was reconstructed anew, and in 1693-96 over it current huge cathedral was constructed. It is one of the most highly regarded constructions of the Naryshkin baroque period.
Since 1672 t(when the monastery was donated possessions of Prince Buinosov-Rostovsky, the monastery has been divided into two parts: the front coutryard, exiting onto Nikolsky Street, and the back, where only men were permitted to be. Entrances to court yard had two over the gate churches. Standing on the property line of Nikolsky street stood the church of St. John the Baptist (XVII century) which was taken down in 1905 despite protests from the Archaeological society. On its place was built a profitable house (rental property) for the monastery with the end facing the street (architect I. Blagoveshchensky). The second over the gate church was the Church in the name of the Savior (1739) and it was connected to a bellower. It was demolished in the early twenties, later on its place a severe office building was constructed.
The cathedral was been decapitated, then it became a dormitory for the College of mines, and later a metal working shop was established. In 1980 restoration began during the process of which under a floor well the remains of the foundation of a church from the XIV century were revealed. In 1990 cathedral was restored, on the eastside two small side-altars were attached, and in 1991 – the church was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church.
The monastery ensemble also includes the rectory and Brethrens' cells reconstructed in XVIII-XIX centuries from earlier constructions and one more profitable house (apartment house) (the Bogojavlensky farmstead), constructed in the end of a XIX-th century to the south from a cathedral - on a place of a monastic tent tower of XVII century.
