This moat was built from the Neglinnaya River to the Moscow River along the Kremlin wall. It was ordered built by Vasiliy III between 1508-1516. It was lined with brick and stones and was from 28-32 meters wide and 9-13 meters deep. It was named for the architect Aleviz Fryazin. It was built after a fire in the square. There were three bridges over the moat at the three Kremlin towers with entrance ways, Sts. Constantine and Helen, Savior and Nikolsky.

After the fire of 1812, the Neglinnaya River was placed underground in pipes and the moat was covered over and planted with trees.

St. Basil's Cathedral's official name is Cathedral of the Intercession of the Mother of God on the Moat and this was the moat.
