Kandanmoorkath Tharavad complex is around 200 - 300 years old, though there are no records that we know of, not surprising considering the fact that cadjan leaf used to be the medium for documentation. What is known is that the family originated from Panamanna in Valluvanad (the tharavad and family still exists there and has very close ties to the famous Panamanna Sankaranarayanaswami temple). Generations back, a sister and her 4 or 5 elder brothers (orphans) left Panamanna and settled in Konnencherry (we are all descended from that lady since we follow marumakkathayam or the matrilineal system). They first built a small shack on the site where my mother currently lives and which developed into a large two storeyed structure with stables, two courtyards etc. Prospering, additional structures came up - the nalukettu, another pathayapura, vast lands (I have heard from my grandmother that among the principal families of Konnencherry we were the biggest landowners with estates called kalams in the mountains as well). All history now. The area from the main group of building upto the pond seen in the picture belonged to the family, as well as due southwards (Katta kalam). The house and plot right next to the pond used to be called Illathe thodi (for visiting Namboodiris to stay in) where my mothers's youngest uncle and family lived till two months ago. The nalukettu which we used to call Naalupera still stands, though the stables there have been pulled down due to snakes breeding there. Our stables have been converted into a house which we have rented out to a Namboodiri family from Mavelikkara. There is a sarpakkavu (sacred grove for serpents) also inside the complex.
