Stuyvesant Street is the only street in Manhattan that is truly going east-west, which is why there is a big compass in the middle of this park. George Hecht was an inventor, manufacturing executive and a patron of a number of city organizations, including the New York Zoological Society, Central Park Conservancy, the Horticultural Society of NY, and WNET/Channel 13. The garden is named after him because he paid for it - a terrible precedent.
