Gets its unique name from the Water Lock mechanism (a la Suez Canal ;-) )that existed in the waterway (Parvathi Putthan-aar) that enabled smooth sailing of water transport in the bygone days.

S M Stands for Sree Moolam after Sree Mulam Thirunal Rama Varma, erstwhile King of Travancore.
