The Little Church was built by German pioneers Frank and Maryann Gaertner Huber and dedicated to St Anthony to honor a pledge made by Maryann's mother in 1814, that should her husband Johann Gaertner survive Napoleon's Moscow Campaign, she would build the saint a chapel. Gaertner survived the Disaster and is buried in the tiny churchyard with a DAR commemorative plaque, honoring him as the only Veteran of Napoleon's Grand Army buried in the State of Iowa.
