The Spartan missile field housed launch silos for 30 Spartan long-range interceptor missles; each three-stage missile was 55 feet (17 m) long, reached Mach 4, and carried a 5 megaton "W71" thermonuclear warhead designed to destroy incoming ICBM warheads at high altitude (outside the atmosphere) using X-rays.
