The Lords' Chamber is the site of important ceremonies, the most important of which is the State Opening of Parliament, which occurs at the beginning of each annual parliamentary session.

The House of Lords is the upper house of the Parliament of the United Kingdom and is also commonly referred to as "the Lords". The Parliament comprises the Sovereign, the House of Commons (which is the lower house of Parliament), and the Lords. In Parliament the 738 members of the House of Lords currently outnumber the members of the 646 seat House of Commons.
