AFENTRIKA or URANIA

Afentrika or Urania is a ruined medieval town located in the Karpas peninsula.It was either destroyed during the Arab invasions of the 8th and 9th century or later in the 13th century. because of the frequent pirate raids.

The inhabitants of the left and settled within the peninsula by building the town of Rizokarpaso located about ten kilometers. Even today visitors can see the ruins of dozens of homes and the preserved church of Panagia Afentrikas built on the ruins of three-aisled Gothic style church, opposite to the remains of a cross-domed Orthodox church.

The city was known in antiquity by the name Urania referred to by Diodorus Siculus, who writes that in 307 BC Demetrius Poliorketes the besieged and conquered. The mistress is located east of the church of Agios Philon and away from him about nine miles.
