    I seem to remember hearing that this was one of the two largest domes in the world until Buckminster Fuller pioneered geodesic domes.

    Designed, in part, by Michelangelo, it is a double dome (one inside the other), paraboloid in shape, rather than hemispherical. One can walk up the stairs between the domes to the Basilica roof.
