The Shearith Israel Congregation is the oldest in the United States dating to 1655. It was founded by Jewish settlers from Spain and Portugal. This is all that remains of the second cemetery used by the congregation. The original lot was a much larger square parcel but was reduced to this small triangle in 1830 when 11th Street was "cut through" conforming to the grid laid out in 1811. The other graves were moved to the Third cemetery on West 21st Street. The cemetery was used from 1805 to 1829.
