Somanur town of Coimbatore district is famous for Textile Cloth Manufacturing. The town has a long history of being associated with textile production. The early years - pre Indian independence - saw the start of cotton 'ginning'. The earliest ginning factory there dates back to 1940. This process allowed cotton producers to de-seed the cotton and prepare it for sale to the 'spinning' mills. The area had spinning mills from the 1950's and now has numerous small and large scale units. Post the spinning mills came the weaving units. Initialy these were hand operated looms that later moved to power looms (called as Tharee in tamil). The latest machines are automatic looms which also result in a great improvement in worker conditions in this humid and cotton dust polluted industry (also called 'autojet as these use a jet of air to propel the shuttle). This small town is now very prosperous with family incomes over $30000 becoming common.
