This is where the Woodlands Psyciactric institution used to be. It was built in 1812, and children who were mentally or severely physically disabled were put in here. During the 1960's, '70s, and '80s, there were many children physically, sexually, and mentally abused here, and despite allegations, it kept on operating until 1994, when Woodlands' last patient left to live in a group-care home in Surrey, on the south side of the Fraser River. The city of New Westminster has decided to redevelop most of the land, and Onni, a major Canadian development group is now building a community on the land, now called Victoria Hill.

  • The northern portion of this area was and still is BC Penitentiary Reserve or the location of the BC Pen (Federal land) The southern part was a ( reportedly nasty) "handicap" kids "hospital" (Provincial land). Two equally nasty institutions that need to be separated and remembered.
