This white five-domed, pillarless church with single apse, along with its octagonal bell tower, were built of brick in 1626 by the order of Patriarch Filaret, father of Mikhail Romanov. They were both originally part of a monastery, which included a hospital that closed in 1709.

While the church was reconstructed several times, and the 17th century, tent-shaped belltower escaped rebuilding.

The church has suffered significantly during the fires of 1812. The five-domed the church was replaced with a single dome covering with one cupola.

The belltower was torn down in the 1930s and in its place was built an apartment house.

In 1984 restoration work began. Initially there were thoughts opening in it museum in honor of Suvorov who was a member of the church and whose parents were buried here, but the church was returned to believers.

The new church has five cupola and the new belltower was built in the old style.
