Former City Estate of Streshnev-Glebov-Shakhovsky (Moscow)

In 1886 Princess Shahovsky-Glebova-Streshneva altered the 18th century family home under the project of two architects.

Fyodor Kolbe reconstructed the street façade, and Konstantin Tersky, possibly with the assistance of his student Fyodor Shekhtel, redesigned the courtyard. Facing Bolshaya Nikitskaya Street is a facade of the European eclecticism with features from the late 18th and 19th centuries, but walking through the massive arched entryway into the courtyard is like turning the clock back in time. Tersky's remarkable pseudo-Russian style unites the domestic façade of the old farmstead house with a horseshoe of service structures dating from the late 18th century. The red brick mansion has stout pillars with pendatives hanging in the double arches and brick dentils along the walls for decoration.

During Soviet years the manor house was occupied as the House of the Medical Workers. In the late 1990s "Helicon-opera" theater relocated here. Recent plans by the theater for reconstruction have destroyed some of the original structures but further demolition has been halted by the city government.
