Opened on 18 November 2001, this 12-storey building is owned by Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) (www.sgm.org.my/), part of Soka Gakkai International (SGI) (www.sgi.org/). Soka Gakkai (literally, "Value-Creation Society") is a lay religious movement within Nichiren Buddhism, a branch of Mahayana Buddhism derived from the teachings of the thirteenth-century Japanese monk, Nichiren Daishonin.

The Soka Gakkai Malaysia focuses on cultural outreach in order to strengthen friendship in the multi-cultural and multi-faith society of Malaysia. SGM hosts numerous public artistic and cultural activities every year in this building. In July 2003, together with the Malaysian Interfaith Network (www.malaysianinterfaithnetwork.net/) and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (www.kas.de/wf/en/), SGM co-organized the "World Religions - Universal Peace - Global Ethic Exhibition" here. A series of film shows and lectures on major world religions accompanied the exhibition.
