This natural waterway was once a busy commercial route into New Orleans (the Carondelet Canal once connected it to the French Quarter at a turning basin after which Basin Street is named). The bayou drained the swamps behind the original city into Lake Pontchartain to the north. The easy portage from the Mississippi River to the bayou and the lake led to the founding of New Orleans here. The bayou's mouth is controlled by a lock near the lake so the bayou is not leveed.
