Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of St. George (Saskatoon)

Canada / Saskatchewan / Saskatoon

This massive Byzantine cathedral was begun in 1939 and completed in 1943, and equals other monumental buildings in Canada in its architectural and artistic expression. Parishioners handled the construction of the Cathedral, keeping overall costs down to a reasonable $18,000. The building has seven entrances with a large octagonal dome ceiling dominating the centre area. The cathedral is highly decorated in gold-leaf and oils, reflecting the Byzantine tradition of religious art. Four angels depicting "toil, enlightenment, creativity, and justice" grace the vaulted ceilings over the sanctuary. The parish hall next door to the cathedral is the Museum of Ukrainian Culture.
