"Ellsloyd" was designed by Fifth Avenue architect Robert David Kohn and built in 1907 for Louis Ellsworth Laflin, real estate developer and director of Elgin National Watch company, Hamilton National Bank, Merchants' Safe Deposit Co., and treasurer of the Chicago Academy of Science. Laflin who studied architecture at the Beaux Arts in Paris, was a life-long friend of Kohn's and the two men closely collaborated on the plans for "Ellslloyd" so named for Laflin's sons, Louis Ellsworth and Lloyd. The estate originally contained exquisite Rose Standish Nichols designed formal gardens.
