St. Mary, the patron saint of the shrine, is also known as Vallarpadathamma, believed to be the protectress of seafarers. Many miracles are attributed to this shrine, which was originally constructed by the Portuguese in 16th century. The most famous legend is that of a Hindu lady who, along with her infant son, were believed to have been rescued miraculously from the bottom of the backwaters after three days gone missing. This church is one of the three basilicas in Cochin (the only Indian city to have the honour of three basilicas). The new rosary park in front of the basilica tells the whole story of Jesus' life.
